Intro to Fasting

Before choosing your fast, it’s import to address the heart of why we do it. The Bible reads; “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6: 16-18

Bases on Jesus’ instruction here and in other passages that address fasting, here’s what we can know:

Practical Aspects to Fasting

Research Your Fast:
There are many types of fasts you can choose from. Here are some suggestions for a 21 day fast that you can look up for further detail:

Plan & Prepare: Once you have chosen your fast, clean out the foods that you know will temp you! Throw away or box things up for awhile. Put it out of temptation’s reach! Then plan what you’ll eat. Purchase the items in advance that you know you’ll need. You might want to make some bulk soups or overnight oatmeal so you have things on hand. This will help ensure that you stick to your fast and not cave when you are hunger than normal, and nothing is on hand!

Keep it Simple So You Can Focus! The more you prepare and plan in advance, the better your fast will go. If you’re choosing a vegetable/fruit fast, cut and store produce in advance. Buy easy to access broths, boxed soups, etc. Easy ‘to-go’ items you can find are helpful so you can focus on prayer, not food prep.

The Point: Remember that the point of the fast is to make more room for God. It’s not about sacrifice, it’s about surrender—feasting on the Bread of Life—receiving his presence above all else. Whatever fast you choose, we encourage you to take something out and then fill it with prayer. If you choose to fast 1 meal a day, fill that time with prayer, scripture reading, resting, meditation, worship. You’ll be amazed at the clarity and discernment that you’ll find after your fast!

Special Note: Some people find treasure in the fast. But many experience change and a clarity around hearing God’s voice more AFTER the fast and over time. Remember that scripture promises reward to those who fast. So be patient. Trust God with your fast and watch him draw you near and fill you with more of himself!
